What is the Beavertail Cactus?

The Beavertail Cactus is known as the beavertail prickly pear. This type of cactus is a low spreading one while it is viewed as a bushy shrub. The name comes from its resemblance of beaver tails, as they are grey in color and appear to be wide and flat. They do not require as much water compared to other types of Cactus,  due to its growth in desert areas near western Arizona and the south and east part of California.This type of Cactus is a medium sized cactus which blooms with pink flowers. Being that the bottom part of this is what gives it the cactus name. As it begins to bud, the thorns begin to arise and it resembles a cactus. The Beavertail Cactus is a Succulent plant type, and is in the family Opuntia. It must have exposure to the full sun, while needing little to no maintenance. This flower grows about 60 centimeters in height, and each plant can have over 100 pads on them. The pads are high and have between a 10-14 centimeter circumference. These flowers grow slowly, although they are wide in length. They made beautiful views on a sandy desert in the southwestern areas of the  United States.

Caring for Beavertail Cactus

Caring for the Beavertail Cactus has minimal to no requirement, due to its setting of being in a dessert. They begin to come around during the Late Spring time where the sun becomes stronger.  The natural setting of this flower requires it to be on a rocky slope or even a canyon. Due to the precipitation that is in the areas of Arizona and California which are the most common, Mother Nature does her part. Nevertheless, deadpads can be removed on this flower, as a clean up. Although that is a choice for the viewers. This does not affect the way that they bloom or appear, being that the flower is bloomed at the top of this cactus shrub. When wanting to plant the Beavertail Cactus, it is important that this is done in an area with strong sunlight. Being that this plant originated from areas where the sun is really strong, this must always stay the same. Outdoor planting is more beneficial due to the amount of direct sun rays. Although if a person is living in an area where sunlight is not as strong, then indoors by a large window where sunlight hits is preferable.

The Beavertail Cactus originates from areas of Mexico and the SW part of the United States. Although they are native to some parts of Utah. This type of plant grows on a rocky area and is planted near the roadside. Hillsides are also where this plant can be found. Although the best areas to find these Beavertail Cactus are in the areas where it originated.
