Brunia

Facts About Brunia

In its native habitat, the Brunia bloom is generally overlooked. It grows on a two- to three-meter-tall single-stem shrub that resembles a pine tree but is much softer. The tiny, spherical inflorescences of Brunia, which are found at the ends of branches and frequently blend in with the dense, dark green foliage above, set this plant apart.

Brunia blooms are infamous for their unreliability when it comes to germinating. This is because Brunia plants may retain their dead flowerheads (which contain seeds) for up to six years! The seeds fall and are capable of sprouting only when a fire sweeps through and destroys the parent plant.

Brunia are indigenous to South Africa and come in a variety of colors ranging from silver to green to red. As any organizer of wedding flowers can confirm, the most coveted type is the muted silver variety (Brunia Noriflora), which is sort of refreshing: John Pawson’s simplicity triumphs against gaudy hues.

Brunia is a byword meaning bravery and honor (chivalry). Brunia cultivars with a silver hue are a good choice if you want to emphasize this meaning even further.
