Campanula

Facts About Campanula

Campanula is also known as Bellflower

More than 50 species of Campanula make up the Campanulaceae family. It comes from the moderate temperature zones of the highlands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and the Kaukasus mountains in the northern hemisphere.

At the plant’s apex, the flowers form a lengthy raceme along one side of the stem. Campanula Flowers are bell-shaped with five pointed lobes, some with sparsely hairy margins, and are approximately an inch long on average. Stamens and a style projecting with a split, curled tip may be found inside the bell. The flower’s colors ranges from blue to blue-violet to purple. There are 5 narrow pointed lobes on the green calyx near the base of the flower. More over half of the plant’s length may be accounted for by the raceme.

Campanula, which means “bell-like” in Latin, is a symbol of both appeal and maturity. “Venus’ Looking Glass” is another title that you may be familiar with. The goddess of love, Venus, is extremely self-conscious and has a magical looking glass. Even the ugliest of people might regard themselves as lovely in this mirror. A shepherd kid accidentally discovers Venus’s mirror after she misplaced it. He quickly becomes dependent on peering into the mirror to see his own reflection. When Cupid finds the shepherd kid, he has to shoot him in the hand because he refuses to hand up the mirror, which Venus has requested that he return to her. The mirror shatters as it reaches the ground. Campanula (Bellflower) flowers sprout out of the shards, which are beautiful to look at.

Northern Italy has a lot of naturally occurring rock formations where bellflowers (Campanula) produce a hanging carpet of flowers. In the Grimm fairy-tale, Rapunzel’s hair, dangling from her tower window, was so enticing. This might explain the Dutch name for rampion, which is the ‘Rapunzel bellflower’. The plant serves as a metaphor for both beauty and maturation.

Campanula is the flower of gratitude, humility, and eternal love.

Campanula in Floral Arrangements

Campanulla (Bellflower) Care
It is not necessary to be an excellent gardener to care for bellflowers. Perennials, in general, are hardy plants that can withstand a wide range of environmental circumstances, including drought. Bellflower maintenance involves removing deadheads to encourage new blooms and a longer show. The plant can also be rejuvenated by chopping it down to the ground in the fall and winter. Invasive types of bellflower, on the other hand, should have their seed heads removed to prevent the plant from spreading.

In June, Glomerata will be accessible. Chimney Bellflower (Campanula Pyramidalis) The small bell-shaped blooms are positioned on the stalk in the shape of a conical pyramid.
