Chocolate Comos

Facts About Chocolate Comos

Mexico is the place where the chocolate cosmos, a perennial blooming plant, got its name.
‘Chocolate cosmos’ is also referred to as ‘black cosmos’ and ‘black biden’.
Cosmos atrosanguineus, originally Bidens atrosanguineus, is a member of the Asteraceae family, which includes daisies.
A typical chocolate cosmos may reach a height of between 40 and 75 centimeters (1.3 to 2.5 ft).
As clones of non-viable plants, many of the chocolate cosmos specimens now on the market will not yield fertile seed.

Brown to maroon flowers grow on chocolate cosmos bushes, which have a chocolatey smell.
Chocolate cosmos thrive in full or partial light, and the tubers they develop from may be split.
In order to thrive year-round, chocolate cosmos plants need a warm environment and normally bloom in the summer and early fall.

As cut flowers or as garden ornaments, chocolate cosmos are widely used.
The chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) has a fleshy tuberous root and is a perennial. In the middle of the bloom there is a raised region that is crimson to reddish brown. There is a distinct aroma of dark chocolate coming from the plant throughout the day.

How to Care for Chocolate Comos

A blossom with a chocolate smell! From early summer through fall, velvety, dark red-brown to virtually black blooms on long, reddish brown stalks bloom. Perennial Mexican native, chocolate cosmos may be grown inside if it isn't hardy enough outside. If you want to see the blossoms up close, grow them in a border or in a container where they can be admired. Cut flowers are also a nice option. With velvety petals, the center of the flower resembles the conventional cosmos shape and creates a cluster. By deadheading once the blossom has faded, you'll stimulate more blooms on your plant.
