Normal to moist soil open locations should expect autumn and winter interest from the Flame Willow. From the start of summer to the end of winter, you may look forward to seeing the bark become a vibrant orange-red. The Flame Willow’s red twigs contrast beautifully with its golden leaves in the fall. Windbreaks and privacy screens may be made rapidly with this fast-growing shrub. Branches and buds of this thick red twig willow are often used by mammals and birds as a source of food and shelter.

The Flame Willow is a fast-growing shrub. Salix ‘Flame,’ when fully grown, will reach a height of 15 to 20 feet and a spread of 10 to 20 feet. Despite its small stature, this shrub can thrive in a wide range of soil conditions, from dry to moist. Maintain a healthy form by pruning or cutting down every few years.

Flame Willow in Floral Arrangements

This plant, together with Redtwig Dogwood, will give your winter picture a burst of color. When it comes to wildlife plants, willows are among the best. Fish, birds, and other small creatures may be attracted to them by planting them near a water supply. A large number of butterflies feed their larvae on the leaves and nectar of the plant. Flame’s compact size makes it ideal for a small garden. Planting it in awe-inspiring drifts beside a stream or a damp environment is breathtaking.

The orange-red winter bark is tinted with gold, which is why the word “flame” is used as a descriptor. This genus’ trees may reach a height of twenty feet, although the average height is only four to six feet. Leaf color changes from dark green to golden yellow in the fall, then stays that way all winter long. There aren’t any catkins to speak of. As with other Willows, Flame needs moist soil and enough direct sunshine to grow.

You may use Flame Willow either as a stand-alone plant or as part of an overall landscape design. Place this shrub in a location where it will be visible even in the dead of winter. The contrast between the snow and the stems is striking. The flowers of this shrub attract a variety of pollinators, including butterflies and bees. Once established, it is deer-resistant and drought-resistant.. You may also remove some of the stems and set them in a floral arrangement in late autumn or winter to liven up the inside of your home.
