Hyacinth

Facts About Hyacinth

The Greeks and Romans are claimed to have introduced hyacinths to Europe. Both Homer and Virgil described the plant’s smell. The hyacinth they knew and the genetic origin of our present cultivars was Hyacinthus orientalis, a native of Turkey and the Middle East. This early hyacinth was really dull. These plants were treasured for their scent more than their appearance. After the Romans departed, hyacinths were no longer used in Europe due to their anemia or other reasons. Reintroduced from Turkey and Iran in the 1560s, it reached the bulb-loving lowlands of Holland. During this period, the Hyacinthus orientalis was transformed into a full-flowered garden treasure by skillful hybridizers in the Netherlands. Botanists formerly classified Hyacinthus into 30 species. Only Hyacinthus orientalis (save for Hyacinthus orientalis albulus, a species strain endemic to southern France currently seldom grown) yields garden-worthy offspring due to botanical reorganizations throughout time. In the modern garden, there are no natural hyacinth variations. The original species is still found in nature, but it is no longer grown or marketed. Madame de Pompadour, King Louis XV’s mistress, had hundreds of Dutch hyacinths “on glasses” into Versailles’ winter gardens in the 18th century. The royal paramour’s love of these deliciously scented Dutch bulb blooms generated a widespread fad among the French aristocracy. Formal beds with hyacinths are still considered elegant in many public and private gardens worldwide.
