Kangaroo Paw

Facts About Kangaroo Paw

Only Kangaroo Paws provide such a variety of color, shape, and texture. This plant’s wooly tubular blossoms resemble kangaroo feet, therefore it’s sometimes referred to as “K-Paws.” The size, length, and color of the flowers vary according on the species and cultivar. Their native Australia sees them most often from October to December, although they also visit California from January to September.

Anigozanthos means “open blossom” in Greek. K-Paws, on the other hand, should be purchased with at least one bloom open. The mature stems are sturdy and vivid. Their lengthy stems may wither if the water supply is interrupted. It’s vital to remember this. After 10 to 25 days, K-Paws may be left in the vase or hung upside down for two weeks to dry.

Kangaroo Paws are great summer plants. Drought-resistant cultivars are prevalent in dry areas like Southern California. The plant’s underground rhizomes, which store water, are vital. The popular Macropidia fuliginosa may live for years in the dry sand plains of Perth, Australia.

The kangaroo paw, Anigozanthos flavidus, has become a popular cut flower in recent years. You’re not alone in wondering how kangaroo paw plants develop their characteristic fuzzy, tubular blooms.

Kangaroo Paw in Floral Arrangements

Kangaroo paws are fantastic floral fillers, even if they aren’t the obvious choice for certain situations. Kangaroo paw flowers are ideal for trendy and seasonal floral designs due to their long stems, hairy texture, and vibrant colors (especially during the fall and winter). Try mixing them with exotic blooming plants like Anthurium or Protea. It comes in white, yellow, green, orange, pink, red, purple

The genus name originates from the Greek concepts “anoigo” (meaning to open) and “anthos” (meaning to eat) (meaning flower). This is perhaps a reference to the species’ large, wide-opening flowers.

The fluffy kangaroo paw blooms are the most common method to recognize them. Australian sword lily’s common names stem from the plant’s physical traits and native country of Western Australia. In the US, Anigozanthos manglesii with red and green blooms is called reindeer paws.

How to Care for Kangaroo Paw

Evergreen perennials of the genus Anigozanthos are found only in dry, sandy parts of Southwest Australia. The Greek elements "anoigo" (meaning to open) and "anthos" (meaning flower) were probably inserted in the genus name by French botanist Jacques Labillardière. The pointy lobes and richly covered hairs of kangaroo paw blossoms are stunning. From afar, these velvety, tubular blossoms resemble kangaroo toes. The temperature of these microscopic hairs affects the final color of the flowers. The plants' hues increase as the temperature decreases. Because of their strong, branching branches, kangaroo paws may reach 305 cm. Their stems feature thin, hairless leaves that arch and may reach 90 cm in length. Cross-breeding may alter the plant's stalk height, color, and size. Mainly A. manglesii (red-green flowers), A. flavidus (yellow-green blossoms), and A. bicolor are commercialized (smaller plants that produce yellow-green to red flowers). Global hybridizers have created cultivars with more spectacular flowers and disease resistance from numerous wild Australian species. Heightens long-lived garden plants, while shorter (or dwarf) varieties make great short-lived perennials. Popular kangaroo paw types include Bush Ranger, Dwarf Delight, and Pink Joey (reddish-pink flowers).
