Lecuspermum

Facts About Leucospermum
The evergreen shrub Leucospermum cordifolium ‘Flame Giant’ has a vibrant orange pincushion flower (technically, the styles of several smaller flowers clustered together) (Giant Orange Nodding Pincushion). This variety blooms late, peaking in February and March, and produces big pincushion flowers with 6 inch broadheads. By growing it in broad sun, you’re ensuring a well-drained, acidic soil. With temperatures as low as 25°F, drought is not an issue. These plants thrive in the yard for an average of eight years, and the flowers are great for bouquets. Leucospermum cordifolium is a plant that thrives in South Africa’s South Western Cape on acidic, nutrient-deficient soils with only winter rainfall. This plant was introduced by CW Green in 1974 and was given the name ‘Vlam’ in South Africa in 1981. Afrikaans is an Indo-European language spoken in South Africa. The name was changed to Flame Giant in order to increase sales in English-speaking regions. The information on this page was compiled using data from our library’s plant collection and other reputable web sources.
