Poinsettia

Facts About Poinsettia

The stunning poinsettia is the epitome of Christmas cheer. Learn a few interesting facts about this seasonal favorite.  As a part of the joyful atmosphere of Christmas, they may be found gracing Christmas cards, ornaments, and dinner tables, as well as front porches. Poinsettias are only one of several plants linked with Christmas that have a long and rich history.

Despite their appearance, the crimson poinsettia petals are really leaves (called bracts). Around one of the plant’s many little yellow flower clusters, they create a circle. Euphorbia pulcherrima, or “the most beautiful Euphorbia,” is the scientific name for Poinsettias.

It was named after Joel R. Poinsett, the United States’ envoy to Mexico in the late 1820s, who popularized and introduced the plant to floriculture. This flower and its leaves have been compared by some people to the Star of Bethlehem, which was used by those wise men on their journey to find Jesus. The blood of Christ is depicted by the red hue of the leaves. His purity is symbolized by the white leaves.

When she couldn’t afford to give a gift to the Christ Child at the church, a Mexican peasant girl came up with a creative solution: she made her own Christmas tree out of Euphorbia pulcherrima. A current word for this is “it’s the idea that matters,” and the girl felt comforted.

The plant will live as long as you take proper care of it. Bracts, or red leaves, that adorn Christmas trees for the duration of the holiday season will be gone shortly. If the poinsettia loses its color, it will still be a wonderful addition to your decor. In order to promote new development, cut the plant down to a height of around eight inches after the bracts have dropped. Fertilize it on a regular basis to maintain it happy and healthy. Temperatures over fifty degrees may necessitate bringing your poinsettia outside. So that you may enjoy its vivid colors just in time for the holidays, bring it inside as soon as the weather cools.

Even though poinsettias are native to Central America, plants need to be kept in a cool area. They like temperatures of fifty to seventy degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature rises over 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the leaves become yellow and fall off, and the opposite occurs when the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also important to keep your poinsettias from being in direct sunlight. Make sure the plant gets six hours of indirect sunlight each day by placing it in a location that receives frequent watering.
