Facts About Protea

L’amour Floral Designs has Protea! Tropical blossoms poised on tall, strong branches. Protea flowers have oval leaves that contrast well with the brilliant blooms in the middle. Choose from a dozen protea types at L’amour Floral Designs to create a unique appearance.

Protea is a genus of around 50 blooming shrubs and trees native to South Africa and Australia. Sugar bushes are so named because they produce so much nectar. Proteas come in many forms and sizes. Colors include pink, red, orange, white, and yellow.

Proteas may be shrubs or towering trees depending on their habitat. Large outer bracts (a colorful modified leaf) coil around the stem of tubular blooms. The bracts may be round, rounded, paddle-shaped, or pointed. They surround a cone-shaped core mass of tubular florets. Red, pink, yellow, cream, and orange Proteas are easily identified.

The flower heads of proteas may be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches across. Large colorful bracts surround the flower heads, which are composed of many smaller flowers arranged in a cluster in the middle. Colorful, long tubular blossoms in pink, orange and yellow contrast with the glossy dark green foliage of these plants. As with artichokes, everywhere you see these unusually enormous blossoms, they stand out.

Proteas are awe-inspiring to look upon, with an almost primal beauty. 300 million years old, Proteas are one of the oldest flowering plants on Earth. The Southern Hemisphere is said to be home to Perias. Even though these flowers are native to the tropics, cultivars from the Northern Hemisphere have had great success growing them.

Protea in Floral Arrangements

Flowers that tower above the landscape in southern California gardens. Proteas are often associated with the countries of South Africa and Australia, yet some of the best are grown in the states of California and Hawaii on flower farms. Proteas are cultivated all around the world for florists. Because of their well-honed survival skills, Proteas are able to quickly repopulate after a wildfire because of their deep roots. Because of their beauty and huge bloom heads, they are often used in floral arrangements.

Their heavenly and exotic aspect is why they are named after a Greek god, Proteus. It is said that Proteus, a Greek legendary figure, was able to change his appearance. Over 1,400 distinct shapes, colors, textures and sizes of the protea flower are available. Proteas are a mythological flower that symbolizes courage, diversity, and change.

Floral arrangements may be enhanced by including exotic flowers such as proteas. Among florists, Proteas are a popular choice because of their unique beauty. Proteas look great when paired with other proteas or in a multi-floral arrangement. These flowers may be used for a wide range of occasions and in a wide variety of arrangements. A gorgeous flower, the protea, may be used in any kind of arrangement, from boho chic to rustic to classic.
