Tuberose

Facts About Tuberose

The Amaryllis family includes the tuberose plant (Polianthes tuberosa) (Amaryllidaceae). It is native to Mexico, although it has never been discovered growing in the wild there. ‘ The plant reaches a maximum height of three feet. The funnel-shaped flowers possess a waxy white tint. They’re well-known for having a very pleasant scent. The long, slender leaves are a distinctive feature of the plant. It was given its name because it has a tuber, a bulbous subterranean stem. These tubers sprout into new plants and spread over the landscape. When the risk of frost has gone, they are sown in the spring. Late summer is when the new plants begin to flower. They’re taken out of the ground in the autumn and placed somewhere cool and dry. Among the most often grown tuberoses are the Mexican Single, Mexican Dwarf, and Pearl Excelsior kinds in the United States. The tuberose gets its name from the long, thin stems that sprout from a tubular rootstock. The thick, sweet scent of tuberose flowers fills the air. Perfumes are made from the flowers. In addition, they are grown in central Europe, southern Africa, and North Carolina and New Jersey for use in fragrances and toiletries. To make wreaths of flowers strung together, it is cultivated in Hawaii. There is a strong, almost nauseous scent to tuberoses. Tube-like rootstock produces a thin stem that may reach heights of up to 3 feet (91 cm). Waxed-white tuberose flowers and eight sword-shaped leaves decorate the stem. Despite its similarity to a tube-shaped rose, the tuberose is not called for its rootstock. Roses are not tuberoses. It belongs to the Agavaceae family, which includes the agaves and other agave-like plants. Polianthes tuberosa is the species.
