The Fourth of July is a national holiday in the United States of America. On July 4, 1776, we think of it as a day that symbolizes our country’s declaration of independence and the founding of the United States.
In fact, the Declaration of Independence wasn’t made until July 4, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted to do so (they did that on July 2, 1776).
It wasn’t the day we launched the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775).
It wasn’t the day Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence’s initial draft that day (that was in June 1776). On November 14, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was handed to Great Britain. Alternatively, the date on which it was signed (that was August 2, 1776).
On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Continental Congress. All modifications and adjustments were agreed upon after a few days’ work after the submission of the first draft, which was due July 2.
The date of July 4, 1776, was included into the Declaration of Independence, and the elaborate handwritten version signed in August of that year bears witness to that fact (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) Also, it’s the date that appears on the first editions of the Declaration, known as the “Dunlap Broadsides,” which were printed and distributed across the new country. As a result, the Fourth of July, 1776, was the date that most people associated with the Declaration of Independence.
On the other hand, we commemorate Constitution Day on September 17th each year, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution rather than its approval date. Because of this, we’d be commemorating Independence Day on August 2nd, the day on which the United States’ Declaration of Independence was signed!
