Kwanza History

Kwanzaa is a week-long festival in the United States that recognizes the African ancestry of African-Americans. From December 26th to January 1st, Kwanzaa is celebrated, with gift-giving and a large feast at the end. The holiday is relatively recent compared to other American holidays. Kwanzaa was originally celebrated in 1966 and was the brainchild of Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor emeritus of Africana studies at California State University. In the wake of the 1965 Watts Riots in Los Angeles, he came up with the idea for this holiday to unite African-Americans.

To create the basis of Kwanzaa, Dr. Karenga studied African harvest festivities and blended features of several celebrations such as the Ashanti and Zulu. According to Swahili, matunda means “first fruits” or “harvest,” and the term Kwanzaa is taken from this word. Festivities often feature singing and dancing as well as storytelling and poetry reading as well as African drumming and eating.

For the week leading up to Kwanzaa, Dr. Karenga developed seven guiding themes for discussion. Using the seven elements of African culture, African-Americans are able to develop and maintain a strong sense of community. One candle is lit each day for a new concept to be explored (candleholder). The central black candle is lit on the first night, and the concept of umoja, or togetherness, is explored. Families celebrate Kwanzaa with a traditional African feast known as karamu on the last day.
