Labor Day History New York City marked its inaugural Labor Day on September 5, 1882, in line with Central Labor Union arrangements. An additional Labor Day holiday was declared by the Central Labor Union on September 5, 1883, only one year after the first one was observed. The first proposal for a holiday suggested that the day be observed with a street parade to demonstrate "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of workers and their families. Many Americans now celebrate Labor Day with similar parades, picnics, and parties. As a result, Labor Day festivities adopted this structure. As the focus shifted to the holiday's economic and civic importance, speeches by renowned men and women were added later in the program. After the 1909 American Federation of Labor conference, Labor Sunday was established as a day to honor the spiritual and educational parts of the labor movement on the Sunday before Labor Day. First, Labor Day was celebrated by labor organizations and particular states. Municipal regulations issued in 1885 and 1886 spawned a campaign for state legislation. However, on February 21, 1887, Oregon became the first state to recognize Labor Day by passing a statute. Labor Day became an official state holiday in Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York in 1887. Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania followed suit before the end of the decade. More than two-thirds of American states had already declared the first Monday in September a legal holiday by 1894, and Congress officially recognized the holiday on June 28th of that year.
