Sweetest Day History
Flowers For Your Sweety
The inaugural Sweetest Day in Cleveland, Ohio, was celebrated on October 8, 1921. C. C. Hartzell, the candy manufacturer who headed the 12-member team, arranged the details of this special day. More than 20,000 candy boxes were donated to orphans, the elderly, and others in need by the group, which enlisted the support of prominent Hollywood figures including Ann Pennington and Theda Bara. To bring a "Sweetest Day" to New York City, candy producers declared October 8, 1922 as Candy Day in the United States. On the Sweetest Day, in 1937, the National Confectioners Association attempted to place it on a par with other well-known holidays. The Sweetest Day Committee handed more over 10,000 candy boxes to 26 area organizations on October 19, 1940, celebrating yet another Sweetest Day. Every year, on the third Saturday of October, people in the Great Lakes area celebrate the Sweetest Day. Gifts like candies, cards, and flowers are given to a broad variety of people, including employees, family members, friends, and romantic partners.
