Valentine’s Day is a holiday that has lasted for centuries. It’s been about love for millennia. That being said, the holiday as we know it today has developed throughout time. In all likelihood, you’ve received roses as Valentine’s Day flowers at some point in time. What’s the harm? They’re stunning and sophisticated, the ideal method to convey your feelings of adoration and devotion. We at KaBloom, on the other hand, are well aware that the rose’s status as a symbol of love didn’t emerge overnight. Valentine’s Day presents have a long and complicated history that dates back to ancient civilizations!

Floral gifts are the greatest way to express your love on Valentine’s Day. As a symbol of love and passion, no matter what kind of flower it is, that has always been the case. This is enough to show the significance of Valentine’s Day for them. Flowers, on the other hand, have their own distinct language.

Society was more tougher and more restrictive in the Victorian era than it is now. Couples and hidden admirers continued their relationships despite the fact that romance lagged behind formality. However, they had to come up with a workaround. Floral dictionaries, which included the mythical meanings of every flower, were popular at the same time, producing a new language known as “floriography”. People would use this to give their lovers cryptic messages in the form of flowers. These messages must have taken a lot of time and effort to put together!

For Valentine’s Day, flowers come to mind. As the most popular Valentine’s Day gift, they’re hardly the only choice. In many cultures, the rose has long been a symbol of passion, with some thinking that the rose was dedicated to the goddesses of love. It’s logical, given that roses have such an ethereal quality. Flower farmers are aware of this, and often hold back their rose inventory and release it around Valentine’s Day to make it even more in demand.

There’s a lot of history behind why people give flowers on Valentine’s Day, even if it’s as simple as picking up a box of chocolates. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more unusual, consider sending a bouquet of flowers. We won’t hold that against you, however. For Valentine’s Day, we offer a lovely selection of flowers that are sure to brighten someone’s day.

Valentines Day Orgin

The origins of Valentine’s Day and its patron saint, St. Valentine, remain a mystery to this day. We do know that February has long been associated with love and passion, and that the modern-day celebration of St. Valentine’s Day has roots in both Christian and ancient Roman customs. How did this ancient tradition come to be connected with a man named Valentine?

At the very least, the Catholic Church acknowledges three martyred saints by the name of Valentine or Valentinus. It’s a popular belief that Valentine was a Roman priest who served in the 3rd century. Claudio II thought that unmarried men were better warriors than those with wives and kids, thus he forbade marriage for young males in his empire. Claudio’s order was a travesty of justice, so Valentine ignored him and kept on marrying young lovers in secret. Claudius ordered Valentine’s execution after learning of his deeds. Others, however, maintain that the feast takes its name from a bishop named Valentine of Terni. Claudius II beheaded him outside of Rome as well.

Others believe that Valentine was slain for trying to assist Christians escape harsh Roman jails, where they were often beaten and tormented, according to other accounts. Some say that an imprisoned Valentine, after falling in love with a young girl—possibly his jailor’s daughter—who came to see him while he was confined, sent the first “valentine” message to himself. A letter signed “From your Valentine,” which is still used today, is said to have been written by him to her before his death. Regardless of the facts underlying the Valentine tales, they always portray him as a compassionate, brave, and romantic character. Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France in the Middle Ages, probably because of this reputation.

Cupid on Valentines Day

On Valentine’s Day cards, Cupid is often depicted as a bare-chested cherub shooting love darts at unsuspecting couples. However, as the Greek God of love, Eros, the Roman God Cupid has his origins in Greek mythology. According to several accounts, he was born to Nyx and Erebus, Aphrodite, and Ares, or Iris, Zephyrus, or even Aphrodite and Zeus, depending on who you believe his parents are (who would have been both his father and grandfather).

Archaic poets in Greece described Eros as an attractive immortal who toyed with the emotions of Gods and mankind, using golden arrows to encourage love and leaden ones to stoke hatred. Before that time, Valentine’s Day cards depicted him as a naughty, chubby little boy who had grown up.

Canadians, Mexicans, Brits, French, and Australians all celebrate Valentine’s Day in addition to Americans. Around the 17th century, Valentine’s Day became widely observed in Great Britain.

Written letters started to be replaced by printed cards in the late 18th century, as printing technology advanced, and it was popular for all social groups to exchange tiny gifts of affection or handwritten messages. At a period when verbal expressing of one’s sentiments was frowned upon, ready-made cards provided a simple means for individuals to convey their views. The growing popularity of mailing Valentine’s Day greetings may be attributed in part to lower shipping costs.

Valentines Day Romance

As Christianity spread, Lupercalia remained legal until Pope Gelasius proclaimed February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day in the fifth century, declaring it to be “un-Christian” and so forbade the celebration. However, it wasn’t until much later that the day was firmly linked to love. Many people in France and England thought that February 14 marked the beginning of bird mating season, which bolstered the notion that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be reserved for love and romantic relationships. “Valentine greetings” were common in medieval times, but the written Valentine’s didn’t begin to exist until the early 1400s, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his 1375 poem “Valentine greetings.” While Charles, Duke of Orleans, was imprisoned in the Tower of London after his capture at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the earliest recorded valentine was a poem he wrote to his wife at that time. Welcome from the British Library in London, England, where the greeting is now part of their manuscript collection King Henry V is said to have employed a writer called John Lydgate to write a valentine some years later.

Valentines Day

According to some, the Christian church chose the middle of February to mark Valentine’s Day in an attempt to “Christianize” the pagan festival of Lupercalia, which occurred around the year 270 A.D., as the date for the first known commemoration of Valentine’s death or burial. Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as the Roman founders Romulus and Remus, were honored during Lupercalia, a fertility celebration held on February 15th.

The Luperci, a Roman priestly order, would convene in a holy cave where it was thought that a she-wolf, or lupa, had cared for Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus, to begin the celebration. A goat was sacrificed for fertility and a dog was sacrificed for cleansing by the priests. When the goat’s skin was ready, the warriors would cut it into strips, dip it in the blood, and proceed to slap women and crops with the goat hide. To the contrary, Roman women were happy to get their hands on the skins since it was thought to increase their chances of being pregnant the next year. Legend has it that all of the city’s young ladies gathered later in the day to put their names in a large urn. Everyone in town who wanted to find a wife would choose a name and be matched with the lady of their choice for a year. In many cases, these relationships led to marriage.
